Alberta Native Flowers & Grasses
The Braeside Eco-sanctuary is a place where you can discover native plants that flourish naturally and bring the spirit of Alberta's strong, resilient beauty to your own backyard. Read on to learn more about some of the flowers, plants and grass you'll find!
Native Flowers
The Alberta Native Flowers Bed features hardy, regionally adapted plant plugs grown in the wild of southern Alberta. These native species support local pollinators and reflect the prairie ecosystem, bringing a piece of Alberta’s natural landscape into Braeside.
The Alberta Native Species Garden highlights plants that thrive in our local climate while supporting the health of nearby ecosystems. Native wildflowers and shrubs provide essential food and habitat for bees, birds, and small wildlife. Because these species are naturally adapted to Alberta’s conditions, they require less maintenance and are more resilient through drought, heat, and winter freeze. Certain species, however, are declining due to habitat loss and changing environmental pressures. Planting native species is a simple, effective way to create a beautiful garden that supports local biodiversity.
Native Grasses
The Alberta Native Grasses Garden Bed showcases hardy, regionally adapted plants that thrive in our prairie climate. These grasses play an important role in stabilizing soil and preserving the natural character of southern Alberta’s grasslands.
Native grasses are quiet but powerful environmental allies. Their deep, fibrous root
systems hold soil in place and enrich it with organic matter. They also improve water absorption, reducing runoff and erosion. Because they are adapted to local climates, native grasses thrive with minimal watering and no chemical inputs. This makes them a sustainable choice for community and home gardens. Native grasses create essential habitats for birds and small mammals, supporting a richer and more resilient ecosystem. In places like Braeside’s ecosanctuary, native grasses help restore ecological balance, strengthen biodiversity, and cultivate green areas that remain healthy year after year!
