Your Braeside Beacon (May 2025)

May in Braeside. Let's Get Growing!

We’re getting the garden ready for the season, and we’d love your help!
We’re getting the garden ready for the season, and we’d love your help!

Join us for a casual spring clean-up at Braeside’s Eco-Sanctuary on May 3 from 10am to noon. We’ll have coffee, snacks, and some easygoing outdoor jobs if you feel like pitching in: things like spreading mulch around the trees, digging out a new native grasses bed, and shaping little swales to help direct rainwater to our garden beds.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done this kind of thing before, we’re happy to show you how. You might even pick up a few tips for your own yard!

If you’re curious about what we’re growing this year or want to hear more about our plans for Braeside’s green spaces, just stop by and ask. It’s a good reason to get outside, meet a few neighbours, and be part of something green.

Break out your butterfly clips, frosted tips, and baggy jeans — it’s time for a blast from the past!

Before you wow the crowd at Trivia Night at Rozzini’s on May 8, test your 90s knowledge right here.

(Yes, this is your official warm-up. No lifelines. No calling your older sibling.)

Start your Saturday with purpose and a little pick-me-up — literally!

Join us for a fun and healthy way to give back to the community! We’ll provide litter-grabbers, bags, gloves, and route maps so you can pick your cleanup spot. After about 90 minutes of tidying up, head back to the Community Centre for free pizza (thanks to Little Caesars!), sweet treats, and prize draws.

Arrive early on May 10 to enjoy free coffee from 9–10am, plus a taste of Communi-tea & Coffee’s signature warmth. We’ll also have tasty breakfast treats from Baker & Spice, thanks to the BCA.

Talking about dementia isn’t easy. Whether it’s a loved one or yourself, recognizing the signs and seeking support can be overwhelming. That’s why we're hosting a gentle, two-part conversation on understanding dementia; what it is, how it progresses, and where to turn for help. Questions are welcome. You're not alone. Join us on May 28 from 1-2 pm.

Get ready for a garden gathering that hammers home the fun!

Birds, bounces, and a bit of building chaos — our garden picnic has it all! We’ve got a bouncy castle for the kids, food trucks to keep you fuelled, and a hands-on birdhouse-building station for anyone brave enough to wield a hammer (BYOH). Bonus points if your birdhouse stands straight and you leave with all ten fingers! ;) Join the buzz and sign up.

Braeside is one of several small-but-mighty communities teaming up through the Calgary Seed Library. It's a plant-powered co-op where seeds (and good ideas) get passed around like family recipes.

Our Garden Committee recently stopped by the Inglewood seed stash, tucked beneath The Next Page bookstore, to swap stories, trade seeds, and soak up some local garden wisdom. It’s like a library card for your garden — no late fees, just leafy rewards.
