A Hall That’s Truly a Work of Art

If you’ve strolled past the Braeside Hall lately, you might’ve done a double-take. Yes, that’s our humble hall now sporting a full-blown art-house makeover!

Credit where it’s due: Calgary artist Daniel J. Kirk has worked absolute magic, turning what was once brown and functional into something that actually stops traffic (in a good way).

Huge thanks to Daniel for seeing beauty where most of us just saw brick and to everyone who helped bring this to life.

We can’t wait to share the story and celebrate the people who made it all happen. Watch for details about an exciting event coming your way in the New Year!

Green Carts, Winter Edition

It’s that time of year again when the leaves are nearly gone, the pumpkins are collapsing in slow motion and our green carts can finally take a bit of a breather. Starting this November, collection shifts to every other week. It’s perfectly sensible really; by now the mornings are frosty, the rakes are nearly retired and we all know snow is only a matter of weeks (if not days) away.

The compost, meanwhile, is mostly coffee grounds, apple cores and the half a bag of spinach we optimistically bought on Sunday.

Here's how to stay on top of things:

  • Check your schedule: calgary.ca/cartschedule has your exact dates.

  • Download the Garbage Day app: It reminds you when to wheel the cart out so you don’t do that mad dash in pyjamas at dawn.

So yes, tuck your green cart in for its well-earned winter nap. You’ve both done enough heavy lifting for one year.

Too Cold to Garden, Perfect for Everything Else

November’s shaping up to be anything but dull in Braeside. We’ve got line dancing, yoga, card games, a book sale and a good old-fashioned coffee chat for our seniors, plus a Holiday Market at the end of the month to wrap it all up.

What’s New in Calgary: Building Resilience Indoors and Out

The City of Calgary’s 7th annual Climate Symposium is back — five days of practical, no-nonsense sessions on everything from climate-ready homes and wild-weather insurance to food resilience and e-bikes that actually make sense.

This year’s theme, “Resilient by Design,” is really about what Calgarians already do best: adapt, improvise and keep calm through hail, heat and whatever comes next. Sessions are recorded with captions and some in multiple languages.👉 Have a look: calgary.ca/climatesymposium

Take a Deep Breath — Literally

Forest Bathing Trail now open at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

If your idea of relaxation involves scrolling until your thumbs ache, here’s a gentler alternative: forest bathing. No, not that kind of bathing, there’s no loofah involved. It’s about slowing down and letting the trees do their thing.

Calgary’s first Forest Bathing Trail has just opened at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, and it’s designed to help us all unplug, de-stress, and maybe even remember what quiet sounds like. The one-kilometre loop has five reflection stations, each with a short “invitation” — a prompt from a certified Forest Therapy Guide to help you tune into your senses, your surroundings and that bit of calm you forgot you had.

The idea comes from Japan, where shinrin-yoku (literally “forest bathing”) began in the 1980s as an antidote to urban stress. Research shows time in nature can lower blood pressure, lift mood, improve sleep and even boost creativity, which beats doomscrolling any day. New seasonal invitations launch Nov. 1. We have a B.I.G. ask

he air’s getting colder, which means rink season is almost here. The Braeside Ice Guardians will soon be out with hoses and headlamps, turning puddles into magic. Fancy joining them?

Drop Doug a note at rink@braesideyyc.ca to get involved!

Get Involved — Join the Crew That Makes Braeside Tick

Ever wondered who actually keeps Braeside running; the events, the markets, the mysterious appearance of coffee at meetings? It’s us — the BCA Board — and our amazing Hall Team, Gail and Karen, who keep the heart of Braeside humming. We’re just ordinary neighbours with a soft spot for this community (and a mild inability to say no)

We’re looking for a few more brilliant humans to join the BCA Board or one of our committees. You don’t need a cape, just a couple of hours and a bit of enthusiasm. Whether you fancy shaping events, greening up our parks, or keeping the hall humming, your contribution really does make a difference. Email president@braesideyyc.ca if you'd like to talk further!
