Your Braeside Beacon (October 2025)

Hello Autumn. Hello Braeside.

This issue is packed: the much-needed painting of our community hall begins this week and those fresh coats will become a work of art on our walls; we are calling for more hands to help the Braeside Ice Guardians get the rinks ready for skating season; you are invited to support our Eco-Sanctuary's fall clean-up; and we are getting everyone set for October's Boos, Brews & Halloween Bash!

And don’t forget — Calgary’s municipal election is October 20. You'll find important information about how to vote, including updates on mail-in ballots and voting stations. Plus, you'll have the chance to hear from the candidates so you can make an informed choice at the ballot box.

👉 Reminder: your BCA membership makes all of this possible. Membership dollars keep the lights on at the hall, supports our out school age childcare program, makes events like Halloween free for members, and helps keep costs down for the whole community. Please take a moment to renew or sign up today because every membership matters! This month, we are delighted to welcome 60 new members to this email list. We are so glad you are here!! Fresh Paint, Fresh Energy

This fall, the Braeside Community Association's building is getting some much-needed love! It desperately needs a coat of paint, and thanks to funding, we have the chance to go a step further and fill our walls with art. Calgary mural artist Daniel J Kirk will be leading the transformation.

  • This week: Daniel begins by washing down the exterior.

  • Oct 1: The Braeside sign will come down, followed in time by the removal of the “people mural” overlooking the parking lot.

We know some neighbours will hold fond memories of that mural. Take this last chance to snap a photo for your memory bank. Inside the hall, we’ll display framed photos to honour its place in our history. The floral mural facing the garden will remain.

We’re turning necessity into possibility, reimagining the building with a fresh coat of paint and a work of art that will add colour, energy and vibrance to Braeside.

Fall Clean-Up & Seed Collection

ree

On Sunday, October 5 from 10 AM to noon, we’ll be sprucing up our Eco-Sanctuary and starting our annual seed collection.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Mulch magic: Thanks to Bartlett Tree Services, we’ve received another big mulch donation. Bring a bucket or wheelbarrow as there'll be free mulch left over to take home.

  • Light help needed: Digging out tree wells, topping up beds and prepping the sanctuary for winter.

  • Seeds to share? Bring any southwest Calgary native plant seeds to donate.

Curious about our Eco-Sanctuary or our Parks & Pathways Project? This is your chance to learn more and get involved. Email garden@braesideyyc.ca with questions or to sign up.

What You Need to Know

Calgary’s next General Election is on Monday, October 20, 2025. Even with the Canada Post mail strike, there are plenty of ways to get the information and resources you need to vote.

What’s Happening

  • Canada Post delivery has been suspended, so some households may not receive a Voter Information Card.

  • Don’t worry — you don’t need the card to vote.

  • Use the “Where Do I Vote” tool at electionscalgary.ca or check your Voter Guide (already delivered in September) to find your station.

Mail-in Ballots

  • If you need a mail-in ballot, request it by October 3 to have it couriered to you.

  • After October 3, ballots must be picked up in person at the Elections Calgary office (1212 31 Ave NE).

  • Details: electionscalgary.ca/mailinballot or call 403-476-4100.

Voting Info

  • The Voter Guide is available online and at libraries, LRT stations, grocery stores, and other public locations.

  • Advance Vote opportunities are also available — check online for times and places.

  • Still unsure? Call Elections Calgary at 403-476-4100 for help.

👉 Bottom line: Even with the mail disruption, you can still get all the info you need. Make sure your voice is heard on October 20.

A big thanks to everyone who joined our Back to School Bash in September. It was wonderful to see so many families join in the fun. Kids jumped through hoops (literally, in our obstacle course!) and then refueled with free slices from Boston Pizza. It was a great way to kick off the school year and we are grateful for the generous financial support of Servus Credit Union!!

Get Your Skates On, Braeside!

As the mornings grow crisper and the evenings cool, we know winter isn’t far off. Before long, the Braeside Ice Guardians will be rolling out the hoses to flood the rink, preparing for another season of family skating under the stars and spirited games of sticks and pucks on the hockey rink. Email Doug at rink@braesideyyc.ca to get involved!

Get Involved – Become a Board or Committee Member

Do you want to help shape the future of Braeside? The BCA is powered by volunteers like you. By joining the board or a committee, you’ll help guide events, programs, and projects that make a real difference in the neighbourhood.

Even a few hours of your time can spark big changes — from helping plan events, to improving our green spaces, to supporting the hall that so many rely on. Make a difference where you live and play.

Interested? Contact Jenny at president@braesideyyc.ca or come to the next community meeting on October 22nd!

Let’s keep Braeside vibrant, welcoming and full of life this fall.
